Dodge Dart announced for 2013!

We were teased earlier this week by photos of the sleek new 2013 Dodge Dart, but Dodge conveniently left out some important details as it prepares for its launch. Key among those details were fuel economy figures, and transmission options. According to Automotive News, Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne told Reuters today that the company expects the 2013 Dart to trump 40 mpg by the end of the month, thanks to a six-speed dual clutch transmission, and a new ZF nine-speed automatic gearbox.

Automotive News reports that the key to the Dodge Dart’s 40 mpg highway rating will be its Fiat-derived six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, bolted to a choice of three fuel efficient inline-fours.  As we previously reported, the three engine choices are a 2.0-liter and 2.4-liter “Tigershark” I-4, and a turbocharged 1.4-liter “Fire” I-4 that see’s duty in the pint-sized Fiat 500 Abarth.
The six-speed dual-clutch auto

won’t be the only fuel-efficient transmission choice in the Dart though; Automotive News also reports that ZF will build a new nine-speed automatic gearbox for the Dart in its South Carolina factory starting in 2013. ZF officials believe that the nine-speed automatic will boost the Dart’s fuel economy by 10 to 16 percent over the dual-clutch transmission.

The 2013 Dart, which will be built in Chrysler’s Belvidere, Ill. plant, will debut at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit next month. If the Dodge Dart does achieve an EPA-estimated 40 mpg highway, it will allow Fiat to buy its final 5 percent of stock, bringing its total holdings of Chrysler to 58.5 percent. The remainder of Chrysler’s stock is held by the UAW’s retiree health care trust.

Pennsylvania joins states with texting-while-driving bans

Pennsylvania on Wednesday became the 35th state to ban text messaging while driving.

Governor Tom Corbett signed legislation into law giving police the authority to charge someone caught texting while driving with a primary offense and a $50 fine.

"The urge to keep the conversation going online can cloud judgment, can make it impossible to focus on what (drivers) should be focusing on," said Corbett, who signed the bill into law at an AT&T mobile telephone store in suburban Harrisburg.

Corbett said 13,790 crashes in Pennsylvania were caused in 2010 by distracted driving, which includes more than texting. He said 1,100 of those accidents involved drivers using a handheld cell phone, and 66 people died because they were not paying attention to how they were driving.

"It's hard to argue against the fact that the most distracting thing that you can do behind the wheel is to be texting...and not paying attention to what you should be paying attention to," he said.

Pennsylvania's new law takes effect in 120 days.

It specifically prohibits all drivers from using an interactive wireless communication device to send, read or write a text-based message. Such messages include text messages, instant messages, email or other written communication, it says.

The law institutes a $50 fine for convictions.

Check out the new Dodge Charger SRT8 Super Bee.

Here's a Dodge Super Bee with some sting. Dodge is going to unveil the 2012 Charger SRT8 Super Bee at the Los Angeles Auto Show. This heritage model always creates a buzz.

"The 2012 Dodge Charger SRT8 Super Bee is a salute to the fun-loving past of Dodge muscle cars powered by the legendary 392 Hemi V-8 in a back-to-basics performance machine," says Ralph Gilles, CEO of Chrysler's SRT and Motorsports division.

That 6.1-liter V-8 puts out 425 horsepower.

Dodge says the new 'bee has a race-inspired interior with a three-spoke contoured steering wheel, exclusive Z-stripe cloth performance seats with yellow and silver striping and embroidered Super Bee logos on each of the front seat headrests.

The instrument panel also features the Charger Super Bee logo on a unique dash plaque.

Newly modified software includes the appearance of the Super Bee logo in the center instrument panel's Electronic Vehicle Information Center at vehicle start up.

On the exterior, the Charger Super Bee features a unique SRT badge with a 3-D helmeted bee mascot on the new split crosshair grille finished in glossy black. The original Super Bee was a version1968 Dodge Coronet, in case you ever wondered.
